WAGNER – Prelude Act III to the opera ‘Lohengrin’ – 6 CELLOS OR CELLO ORCHESTRA

Other Identification:
The “Prelude to Act III” from Richard Wagner’s opera Lohengrin is a joyful, jubilant instrumental introduction to the wedding procession of Lohengrin and Elsa, not a dark reflection of the tragedy that follows in the act. It features bold brass fanfares and lyrical melodies, culminating in the famous “Bridal Chorus” that signals the wedding ceremony and procession.
Instrumentation:
FOR SIX SOLO CELLOS, OR A FULL CELLO ORCHESTRA
Arranged by David Johnstone

3 PDFs:
[1 – Cellos 1, 2 and 3
[2 – Cellos 4, 5 and 6
[3 – General Score
Approximate difficulty:
Quite difficult (all parts)
Johnstone’s adaptation is suitable for either six solo cellists, or a larger cello ensemble or cello orchestra. It offers interesting part-writing to all six voices, and is a full version with no cuts being made. It is difficult – for the velocity – but is perfectly playable by more advanced players. The triplets are to be played in spiccato, but this very close to the string. The melodic lines can be sung out in ample expressiveness. This is one of David Johnstone’s fondest arrangements!
