WERNER – Quartet in C minor, Op.6 – QUARTET OF THREE CELLOS AND VIOLA

Josef/Joseph Werner (25th June 1837 in Würzburg – 14th November 1922 in Munich ) was a German composer, cellist and cello teacher.
He was a student of Joseph Menter (1808—1856) and then with Hyppolit Müller (1834–1876). Curiously, although a clear first study cellist, he took violin lessons from Joseph Moralt and Franz Joseph Fröhlich, and on top of this, from 1867 onwards he also studied composition with Friedrich Grützmacher in Dresden .
He became principal cellist from 1856 of the Munich Hofkapelle, the predecessor orchestra to the Bayerisches Staatsorchester.
He was the teacher of the cellists Christian Döbereiner (1874—1961) and Marie Geist (1859-1915), and of the operetta and film composer Toni Thoms (1881-1941). From 1857 he taught at the Royal Academy of Music in Munich with the title of professor; however, he seems to have been terminated in this position in 1904.
As an instrumentalist and composer, Werner wrote a practical cello method, studies, etudes, caprices, solo pieces, and numerous arrangements.

Personal

David Johnstone lives near Pamplona (Navarre, Spain) with his wife Rosa and their two “Spanglish” children, close to the Atlantic Pyrenees. The nearest international airport is Bilbao.

He is interested in world affairs, politics, animal rights, and most sports (including being a lifelong suffering Reading FC fan!). Also passionate about Celtic culture and genealogy, he has traced his ‘English’ family back to 1280, although Scotland and Ireland have also shaped his background. And yes — he is half-ashamed to admit it, he loves silly jokes!

Social Work

David Johnstone supports animal rights, he is against any form of abuse towards them, and says a loud “NO” to bullfighting, foxhunting and any other animal cruelty.
