XMAS-CHRISTMAS – Ukraine traditional – Carol of the Bells – 5 (4) CELLOS

Other Identification:
“Carol of the Bells” is based on a Ukrainian New Year’s song called “Shchedryk”, composed by Mykola Leontovych in 1916. The original Ukrainian song, which refers to a swallow bringing prosperity, became an international hit after Peter Wilhousky wrote new English lyrics for it, changing the theme to Christmas bells. The song is also a symbol of Ukrainian resilience and cultural identity.
Movements or sections:
Song
Instrumentation:
FOR QUINTET OF FIVE CELLOS
However, cello 5 consists entirely of one harmonic note, so it will probably be taken up by cello quartets without that 5th part !
Arranged by David Johnstone

Some musical scores have been very generously edited by Katja Denzler as an offering to ‘Johnstone-Music’.
Katja Denzler is a professional German cellist. She studied cello and chamber music at the Folkwang University of Essen. She has specialized in chamber music, often performing as a member of a string quartet lead by Susanne Stanzeleit in Great Britain; indeed, this group won the Menuhin Prize at the 1st London String Quartet Competition. At the present time she is teaching at the Bochum Music School.
Approximate difficulty:
Easy to medium (fairly easy for the left-hand, but quite fast for the bow!)
