Brief Notes:

The ‘SONATA PARA TRES’ (Sonata for Three) was written by David JOHNSTONE in February-March 2024 for a Trio of THREE VIOLINS. This unusual grouping offers many possibilities amongst violin colleagues, and, as a chamber work, all three voices are almost equally important; indeed, often the second part ventures above the first part second and the third part above the second and even first part!

It is not easy – both technical and artistic challenges will be found, making it suitable for advanced students and professionals. It is basically tonal; or rather, half-tonal might be a suitable description.

The work is arched in three movements with the central movement being the central penetrating force to the work. The first movement (in two halves) displays the three voices independently, as if the treating unknowns, whilst the second starts to weave the parts together. In the third movement we arrive at a sense a friendship, making the ‘creation’ a sort of journey through life.

The beginning part of the second movement features important rhythmic effects, in two possibilities:

1) produce hissing wind noises from the teeth (almost angrily!) and 2) the sound of hitting finger knuckles on the body of the violin; the performers decide a free order of the two effects or to use just one.
