Notes:
«Kathleen Mavourneen» is a song written in 1837, composed by the cellist-composer Frederick Crouch with lyrics by a Mrs. Crawford. «Mavourneen» is a term of endearment derived from the Irish Gaelic mo mhuirnín, meaning «my beloved». The Irish soprano Catherine Hayes (1818–1861)—the first Irish woman to sing at La Scala in Milan – learned «Kathleen Mavourneen» while training in Dublin. It became her signature tune during concerts, and she sang it for Queen Victoria in 1849.
«Kathleen Mavourneen» gained popularity with American audiences as a direct result of Hayes’s international concert tours between 1851 and 1856. It was popular during the American Civil War. It eventually became a theme song of sorts for the men and women who were separated by the war between the North and the South. This haunting song also took on significance to Irish prisoners sent to Australia, who feared a “Kathleen Mavourneen”, or life-long sentence from the English.
Later, several silent films were titled Kathleen Mavourneen, the first such drama being produced in 1906 starring Kitty O’Neil, Walter Griswoll and H.L. Bascomb. Other such silent films were produced in 1911, 1913 and 1919, the last of these starring Theda Bara – however, at the release of the 1919 film, Irish and Catholic groups protested not only for the depiction of Ireland but also for the use of a Jewish actress for the leading role, so Fox Film Corporation saw no other choice than to pull out the film after several theatre riots and bomb threats.
It should also be mentioned that in the following generation two sound films with this title were also produced, in the years 1930 and 1937. Much more recently the song was sung in an episode of the TV series Maverick featuring Roger Moore as Beau Maverick. (“The Bold Fenian Men Series 4 Episode 14”). The song plays a prominent role in Michael Shaara’s Civil War historical novel ‘The Killer Angels’ and its film adaptation Gettysburg.
Cello Information:
The cello virtually always in the first 4 positions … but certain experience is required to perform this piece. The Eb Major tonality means that very regular backward (and forward!) extensions are required for the left-hand. The bowing arm needs to be able to maintain a full singing sound, especially if programmed with a string orchestra.
Enjoy the Music!
Lyrics:
Kathleen Mavourneen the gray dawn is breaking
The horn of the hunter is heard on the hill
The lark from her light wing the bright dew is shaking
Kathleen Mavourneen what slumbering still
Oh have you forgotten how soon we must sever?
Oh have you forgotten this day we must part?
It may be for years and it may be forever
Oh why are you silent thou voice of my heart?
It may be for years and it may be forever;
Then why are you silent Kathleen Mavourneen?
Kathleen Mavourneen awake from thy slumbers
The blue mountains glow in the sun’s golden light
Ah! Where is the spell that once hung on my slumbers?
Arise in thy beauty thou star of my night
Mavourneen, Mavourneen my sad tears are falling
To think that from Erin and thee I must part
It may be for years and it may be forever
Then why are you silent thou voice of my heart
It may be for years, and it may be forever;
Then why are you silent, Kathleen Mavourneen?
