Schindler’s List is a 1993 American epic historical drama film directed and produced by Steven Spielberg and written by Steven Zaillian. It is based on the 1982 non-fiction novel Schindler’s Ark by Australian novelist Thomas Keneally. The film follows Oskar Schindler, a German industrialist who saved more than a thousand mostly Polish-Jewish refugees from the Holocaust by employing them in his factories during World War II.
The principal photography took place in Kraków, Poland, over 72 days in 1993. Spielberg shot in black and white and approached the film as a documentary. Cinematographer Janusz Kamiński wanted to create a sense of timelessness. John Williams composed the score, and violinist Itzhak Perlman performed the main theme. Schindler’s List premiered on 30th November, 1993, in Washington, D.C. and was released on 15th December, 1993, in the United States.
The ’celebrated’ John Williams, who frequently collaborates with Spielberg, composed the score for Schindler’s List. The composer was amazed by the film, and felt it would be too challenging. He even said to Spielberg, “You need a better composer than I am for this film.” Spielberg responded, “I know. But they’re all dead!”
Often listed among the greatest films ever made, Schindler’s List has featured many accolades, including the TIME magazine’s Top Hundred as selected by critics Richard Corliss and Richard Schickel, the Time Out magazine’s 100 Greatest Films Centenary Poll conducted in 1995, and Leonard Maltin’s “100 Must See Movies of the Century”. The Vatican named Schindler’s List among the most important 45 films ever made.
Given the special position of this film, David Johnstone has created a work from the violin theme which might be considered a carefully crafted full concert piece for a duo of two cellos. It is certainly all playable, though needing its necessary practice, coming complete with cadenzas for both instrumentalists!
Dedicated to the fine Australian cellist and pedagogue Warrick Dobbie
