Notes:
Glazunov’s Meditation in D major, Op 32, for violin and piano or orchestra was composed in 1891, and published the following year in Leipzig. The composer conceived this as a lyric piece for salon or concert hall, and it was a popular recital and encore piece in the early twentieth century.
The piece is a tranquil and very beautiful melodic outpouring, based throughout on the romantic theme heard at the outset, and uses an extremely wide range of the solo instrument. The accompaniment is noted for the exquisite harmonic restraint.
It exists in several arrangements apart from Glazunov’s own: the British composer John Foulds, for example, made a version for violin and chamber orchestra. Johnstone simply transcribes the violin part down an octave; suitable for professional cello players and advanced students.
