SONG WITHOUT WORDS, Op.62/1 ………Mendelssohn
prepared for duo of Cello and Piano by David Johnstone

EXAMPLE from the Cello work:
Notes:
The Songs without words (‘Lieder ohne Worte’) are a series of short lyrical piano pieces by Mendelssohn, written between 1829 and 1845 and collected in 8 volumes, with each one consisting of six pieces. Most of these creations are within the grasp of pianists of various abilities, and this has contributed to the popularity of the sets.
So, in a complete listing the present cello arrangement was the 25th in overall that Mendelssohn composed! The fifth book was written in 1842-44 and dedicated to Clara Schumann. Of the six ‘Lieder ohne Worte’ of the fifth volume (Op. 62), no fewer than three of the pieces were given descriptive titles. The remaining untitled pieces are No. 2 in B flat (Allegro con fuoco), and No. 4 in G (Allegro con anima), and – what especially interests us here – Op. 62 No. 1 in G (Andante espressivo). This song was originally in G Major, but here placed in C Major – it is only 41 bars long, yet it shows originality and is very compact. Most of the cello writing is placed in the tenor clef; however, although 5th, 6th and 7th position abound throughout, passages in thumb position are not included – making an ideal concert piece for medium level cellists learning or improving these intermediate positions!
This piece, and truly all these songs by Mendelssohn are to be amiably listened to rather than be academically analysed. We might be reminded by the musical critic Joan Chissell that “without all these pieces, how much poorer our understanding would have been of the impressionable heart behind the master-craftsman’s façade.”
