Notes:
This light-hearted ‘creation’ in its various formats has proven to be one of the most popular of David Johnstone over the past few years; it is (unashamedly) a transcription of his with many favourable comments! This music is, of course, based on the overture ‘The Magic Flute’ by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
The Magic Flute (German: “Die Zauberflöte”), K. 620, is an opera in two acts by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart to a German libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder. The work is in the form of a Singspiel, a popular form during the time it was written that included both singing and spoken dialogue. The work was premiered on 30th September 1791 at Schikaneder’s theatre, the Freihaus-Theater auf der Wieden in Vienna, just two months before the composer’s premature death. The Magic Flute is noted for its prominent Masonic elements, although some scholars hold that the Masonic influence is exaggerated.
The overture was finished just several days before the premiere of the opera. Scored for flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, horns, and trumpets in pairs, three trombones, timpani, and strings, the Overture is succinct and energetic. After the initial tonic triad statement opening, the music leaps into an Allegro. The Magic Flute weaves story and music together so effectively that they become one. If Mozart had not died two months after the premiere of The Magic Flute, his life likely would have been changed by its success. Instead, the opera would be Mozart’s last great completed work.
This very shortened version for a 4 Saxophone ensemble (or in a sax ‘ensemble’ of any size!) is highly recommended for all enthusiastic sax players as a fun item, as well as for use in conservatoires, musical courses and for the library of sax teachers!
