“Mattinata” (translated into English: ‘Morning Serenade’) is a song composed by Ruggiero Leoncavallo in 1904, dedicated to Enrico Caruso, who was the first to perform it on 8th April, 1904, in Manhattan, New York, in a studio of rudimentary recording set up in one of the representation rooms of a luxury hotel.

This music is influenced by the well-known “mañanitas” of Mexican folklore. However, the precedent is much more archaic: the “jarchas” and the “albadas” of traditional medieval lyric already spoke of the same literary topic, that is, of the arrival of the new day, of sunlight that puts an end to darkness, as a synonym of joy. resplendent that the beloved woman supposes for the enamoured singer.

Since its launch at the very beginning of the twentieth century it has been performed and recorded literally hundreds of times!
