Notes:
Richard Wagner wrote Tannhäuser, one of his greatest operas, in 1845. It is an opera in three acts based on two German legends. Firstly, Tannhäuser, a 13th-century German Minnesänger and poet. Then secondly, that of the Wartburg Song Contest, a minstrel song-singing contest supposedly held in 1207 at the Wartburg castle in Thuringia. The story centres on the struggle between sacred and profane love, and of redemption through love. Also, for a third important element there is the mythical grotto of Venus, the goddess of love; indeed, the original title of the opera was even intended to be “The Hill of Venus,” but the publisher strongly objected!
The famous Grand March occurs in Act II, Scene 4, as Elizabeth and Landgrave watch guests arrive for the Sängerkrieg (Song Contest). The Grand March is also known as the “Entrance of the Guests” and features an exciting fanfare with magnificent choral-style writing complete with fast-moving high register triplets.
David Johnstone has taken an anonymous existing string version as his base for this presentation; however, this copy contained numerous inconsistencies that have (hopefully) been somewhat cleaned up. This arrangement is intended for professional or near-professional players – the ability to cope with many of the Popper Etudes is almost obligatory! Despite its grandiose lay-out the cello version is also ‘chamber music’ where all four parts interchange in the melodic importance.
