prepared for an Ensemble of 3 Cellos and Piano by David Johnstone

The origin of the folk-song is thought to have been dated from about 1600, but the original arranger of this version – for 2 sopranos, baritone and piano – is not recorded. However, it was published by Novello, probably comfortably past a century ago. This arrangement uses English words by John Oxenford (1812-1877).
Lowered an octave, it fits perfectly for elementary cellists. Cello 1 is entirely in first position except for two sole notes on ‘E’ (1stt finger, 4thh position). Cello 2 and Cello 3 are likewise in first position, with occasioinal forward extensions on the 2ndd and 4thh fingers. The piece is short, so may be played two – or even three – times….
