Notes:
Ludwig van Beethoven wrote his 32 piano sonatas, between 1795 and 1822. Although not originally intended to be a coherent whole, they form one of the most important series of works in the history of music. Hans von Bülow called it “The New Testament” of music (the old-testament being ‘The Well-Tempered Clavier’ by Johann Sebastian Bach).
The two sonatas forming Opus 49 (the Piano Sonata No. 19 in G minor, and the Piano Sonata No. 20 in G major) are short sonatas by Ludwig van Beethoven, published in 1805 (although the works were actually composed almost a decade earlier). Both works are split into two movements.
These sonatas are referred to as the ‘Leichte Sonaten’ and supposedly were to be given to his friends and students. Beethoven even suppressed numerous works in his earlier years, sometimes revising them later for publication or at other times determining that they were simply not fit to see ‘the light of day’. Some early works were ‘hidden’ from publication for his entire life. However, in the case of these two sonatas, it was Kaspar van Beethoven, the composer’s brother, who decided they were worthy of publication. Against the composer’s preference, he presented them to a publishing house, and so allowing us to hear works in posterity that might otherwise have been lost or destroyed.
The Sonata No. 20 in G Major is a relatively simple work, featuring much less sophistication than most of the other piano sonatas. There are no dynamic indications in the autograph or first edition. It is considered the easier of the two “easy sonatas”, in fact, the easiest of all the Beethoven piano sonatas. Arranged for two violins, however, the difficulty is far greater – this wonderfully spontaneous work takes on a far more virtuoso quality and a great concert item!
