Brief Information:

Petite Pièce was a small piece of around two minutes duration that Debussy composed in 1910, being the shortest of all his chamber music works. Its original title was “Morceau à déchiffrer pour le concours de clarinette de 1910” and this is due to being devised as a sight-reading test for the Paris Conservatoire! It must be in posterity one of the most popular exam pieces ever! In his output this miniature came directly after the “Première Rhapsodie” (which incidentally was also listed in the final year clarinet examination at the Paris Conservatoire, one of Debussy’s obligations for being on the board of directors). Some say that the ‘Petite Pièce’ has jazz overtones, but probably it is rather more nocturnal.

Johnstone has basically bring the writing down an octave in the same way that Grützmacher did with the Schumann Fantasiestucke, Op.73, also originally for clarinet but now firmly cemented in the cello repertoire. Obviously not all works can receive this treatment although this is fairly easy to do… but of course it’s not done until someone does it!
