CINK, Antoni – Andante Religioso – for FOUR CELLOS

Notes:
Little is known of Antoni Cink. He was born in Pibram (Czech) but seems to have been better known professionally in Poland. Apart from his cellist career, he was professor at the Krakow Conservatoire, and also a professor at the Warsaw Musical Union.
As a performer he held the principal cello position in the Elberfield Municipal Orchestra, Germany; simultaneously cello teacher at Rauchenecker’s Music School (Elberfield). He was the cellist of the Hermann Quartet (Warsaw).
He was an arranger of high quality and also composer; albeit an occasional composer. It is a shame that so little survives today.
The ‘Andante Religioso’ was originally published for cello and harmonium, but the writing is so obviously in four parts and so much in the comfortable cello registers that one may well ask if it were perhaps originally a cello quartet! Therefore, very little effort was required on the part of David Johnstone to prepare this for four solo cellos. It is something similar in ambience to the Serenade and Romance for four cellos of Georg Eduard Goltermann, however here with more rich harmony and part-writing – this being a generation later.
Level: Medium – thumb position is not required at any moment, and the piece is set in C Major.
