DUNHILL, Thomas F. – Three Cello Caprices (1917 – Op.51)
– newly created for Solo Cello with accompaniment of second cello by DAVID JOHNSTONE
PDF 1 – PLAYING SCORE of both parts together
Notes:
In addition to Thomas Dunhill’s 101 listed opus numbers, which range from chamber music, songs and instrumental pieces to symphonic scores and music-theatre, Dunhill also composed a great number of short piano pieces intended to enrich the repertoire of students and amateur players of all ages. He had a particular skill for creating music which, though of only moderate technical difficulty, was firmly built on strong, engaging melodies characteristic of a subtle and profound musical sensibility. Many of these pieces were published in the 1920s and 30s, when they were much in demand by the Associated Board as examination material.
However, transferred to the possibilities of a solo cellist, these same pieces become almost of virtuoso level! A second cello part (perhaps to be played by a teacher or cello friend) help to give musical sense and direction to the difficult first part.
Johnstone has chosen the following numbers, giving the reason alongside:
Caprice No.1 – G Major [velocity and brilliance]
Caprice No.2 – C Major [study in sixths, with staccato/spiccato)
Caprice No.3 – D Major [delicacy of phrasing, intermingling legato with repeating notes that indicate a spiccato ‘a la Elgar’!]
