Information:
MIREIA’S MILONGA (SONATINA) is a work for the (still) rather unusual combination of violoncello and accordion, and in this case with the extra double bass or second cello part being optional. It is set in a loose sonata form and should be considered a true chamber music piece, and not merely a solo for cello. There is also a version for violin soloist, in this case called ‘Sonatina en forma de Milonga’ (note that the writing for accordion and possible third instrument is identical). The cello writing uses virtually all the normal playing register of the instrument (3 and a half octaves) but is fairly comfortable for meium to advanced players; two alternatives to the playing octave is offered at a couple of moments (one for simplifying, and the other singing out an octave higher!).
There are two main themes, the first of which bears a certain resemblance with the ‘feel’ of the main theme to Piazzolla’s ‘Oblivion’, whilst the second theme contains a repeated ascending scale-like motive – however, both of these cantabile melodies are accompanied by similar gentle undulating arpeggio figures. From the second theme one progresses almost imperceptibly into a discreet development section which true to tradition alternate between these two themes, before a full statement of the first theme in the G minor tonic key. There are also small hints to a chorale motive (a la Bruckner!) which sometimes have connections to virtuosic cadenzas. The performance duration in total may vary considerably from performance to performance, but should be somewhere between six-and-a-half to seven minutes.
The work in this version has a double dedication – to the fine Catalan cellist Mireia Pla and to the Navarre accordionist Fernando Salinas.
