This work of 2021 is based upon material from a previous viola work but it is sufficiently developed and expanded (almost 50% longer) to be truthfully classed as “new”.
It has a performance duration of about 19 minutes, and is cast in one sole movement which resembles a great arch – the faster and more virtuoso writing in the centre with powerful and elegiac slower parts at the beginning and the end. The orchestra is scored for full strings and two horns (F).
The soloist writing is not primarily intended to be virtuosic; never-the-less there are many moments of difficult (but always playable!) writing. The orchestral parts are not unduly difficult, except perhaps for the grandiose orchestral ‘tutti’ near the climax of the development section. The two horns (in F) work as a pair and are always obligatory in performance. If possible the string orchestral size should have a minimum of 7-6-4-4-2 player strengths. A piano reduction has not been made on account of the harmonic sustaining chords in many moments of the writing.
The work is tonal, perhaps classed as post-romantic – Vaughan Williams and Richard Strauss might be cited as influences in this composition. A most useful addition to viola concerto repertoire – a most unbiased opinion of course!!
Anyway, please enjoy the music!
