Lohengrin, WWV 75, is a Romantic opera in three acts composed and written by Richard Wagner, first performed in 1850. The story of the eponymous character is taken from medieval German romance, notably the Parzival of Wolfram von Eschenbach and its sequel, Lohengrin, written by a different author, itself inspired by the epic of Garin le Loherain. It is part of the Knight of the Swan tradition. The opera has inspired other works of art. King Ludwig II of Bavaria named his fairy-tale castle “New Swan Castle”, or “Neuschwanstein”, after the Swan Knight. It was King Ludwig’s patronage that later gave Wagner the means and opportunity to compose, build a theatre for, and stage his epic cycle The Ring of the Nibelung.
The most popular and recognizable part of the opera is the Bridal Chorus, better known as “Here Comes the Bride”, often played as a processional at weddings in the West. The Prelude to Act III represents the wedding celebration itself, and the bridal march is the end of the night. Most of this music is the total opposite of the Prelude to Act I. This one starts out and ends loud, gaudy, and bawdy like any great party anthem. The brass blast out the opening fanfare and then lead the charge melodically. That, combined with the constant tremolo in the strings and the pulsing rhythmic drive throughout create excitement right from the start. In the middle, you’ll hear the brass and percussion drop out, and the oboe picks up a sweet little melody that resembles the famous bridal march melody. It’s a brief moment to remember that this is a wedding and not just a great party. But it’s not long till the mood picks up again and soon our opening party theme busts out for one last dance at the wedding party.
Johnstone’s adaptation is suitable for either six solo cellists, or a larger cello ensemble or cello orchestra. It offers interesting part-writing to all six voices, and is a full version with no cuts being made. It is difficult – for the velocity – but is perfectly playable by more advanced players. The triplets are to be played in spiccato, but this very close to the string. The melodic lines can be sung out in ample expressiveness. This is one of David Johnstone’s fondest arrangements!
This musical creation was originally written for: Giovanni Ricciardi and the ‘Italian Cello Consort’ (Genoa)
