Information:
SONATINA EN FORME DE MILONGA de David Johnstone is a new work of January 2018 for the (still) rather unusual combination of violin and accordion, and in this case with the extra double bass part (or equally well cello) being optional. It is set in a loose sonata form and should be considered a true chamber music piece, and not merely a solo for violin. There are two main themes, the first of which bears a certain resemblance with the ‘feel’ of the main theme to Piazzolla’s ‘Oblivion’ whilst the second theme contains a repeated ascending scale-like motive – both of these cantabile melodies are accompanied by similar gentle undulating arpeggio figures. There are also small hints to a chorale motive (a la Bruckner!) which sometimes have connections to virtuosic cadenzas for the violinist. The performance duration in total may vary considerably from performance to performance, but should be somewhere between six-and-a-half to seven minutes.
