Notes:
The Romanze (Romance) of David Popper for cello and piano was composed in about 1866, and was one of his first published pieces (1867) when it was taken on by the Fritzsch Editorial. The work was dedicated to Anna Mahlig (a virtuoso piano soloist, often appearing with orchestras). It probably received some early popularity, as there were also versions made for violin or viola soloist.
As time passed, many of the early pieces of Popper seemed to get forgotten – indeed, only half of the first ten published opuses are catalogued today. The first piece which has maintained its place in the more mainstream repertoire is probably considered as the Concert Polonaise in D Minor, Op.14 (dedicated to King Wilhelm of the Netherlands), yet this was composed over a decade later than the ‘Romance’ by which time Popper had become more ambitious, especially on a technical level. That is not to say that the Romance is by any means easy, and some harmonic progressions show his intuitive grasp of romanticism from his composer contemporaries.
This piece has probably never been orchestrated in any form (unlike so many of Popper’s works), and that seems such a shame. The present setting is with string orchestra – not too small in numbers please, if possible, as there are very regular divisis in all parts except double bass. Therefore, the suggested absolute minimum string orchestra player size should probably be about 6-6-4-4-2. There is interest for all parts, and several passages for the section principals alone too. This is suitable and highly programmable for all professional, higher student and adult amateur orchestras; just a few divisis in the first violins might need special concentration in the upper voice of the two.
This present orchestration is dedicated to the very fine Swedish cellist and conductor Peter Schoening – this was certainly a great idea he gave me!
