‘S Wonderful // I got plenty o’ Nuttin’ // Cadence – Cello I // Rhapsody in Blue theme
General difficulty of the music – other brief Information:
DIFFICULT. This is a work that needs rehearsal, even for professional cellists, but is well worth the effort. All parts have ample protagonism, weave in and out of each other, and compliment each other. However, it is scored in well-playable registers of the cello; very little thumb position but plenty of 5th, 6th and 7th positions.
The compositions of Gershwin brilliantly spanned both popular (especially jazz) and classical genres. Among his best-known works are the orchestral compositions Rhapsody in Blue (1924) and An American in Paris (1928) as well as the opera Porgy and Bess (1935). The melodies taken for this Grand Suite for three cellos are largely taken from the first and last of the works just mentioned. It is a full-scale recital work (duration about 16 mins) though there is no problem is programming individual piece/pieces if one wishes.
