Brief Information:

This work includes music from the Romeo and Juliet (overture-fantasia). Tchaikovsky had seriously considered writing an opera on the subject of Romeo and Juliet between 1878 and 1881. Amongst his preparations were sketches for a duet scene partly based on themes from the overture-fantasia, which were found to be advanced but unfinished after the composer’s death in 1893. Given the enormous musical value, this was almost immediately completed by the important Tchaikovsky expert Sergey Taneyev, and orchestrated with double winds (plus cor anglais), four horns and strings. This must have been heard as pure and intense 100% Tchaikovsky when it was premiered in St. Petersburg in 1894. Indeed the worth of the work is shown by the very fact of its publication the following year.

Its 277 bars are divided as follows:

Andante non tanto quasi Moderato—Andante—Allegro giusto

The average duration is some 13 minutes. Juliet is the soprano, here represented by the viola, and Romeo (tenor) as cello. It sounds convincing played either with orchestra or with piano accompaniment – it is hoped that this version might become an interesting piece of repertoire for violists and cellists!
