‘Xalbadorren heriotzean’ is an overwhelming emotional song, a tribute, a farewell song after a death. It has become the new ‘Agur jaunak’ in the Basque world. Irremediably linked to the tears and pain left behind by the departure of a loved one, the lyrics and voice of Xabier Lete remind us of the death in 1976 of the Iparralde poet Ferdinand Aire Etxart ‘Xalbador’, the shepherd from Urepele.

Unfortunately, Lete’s own composition also served to say goodbye to him too, after his death in 2010.

The solo cello version, in the sense that it attempts to capture the mood of the original, within the possibilities of a single cello. It’s not so technically difficult, although playing solo cello without accompaniment is always something to take seriously!
