Manuel de Falla y Matheu (23rd November 1876 – 14th November 1946) was a Spanish composer. Along with Isaac Albéniz and Enrique Granados, he was undoubtedly one of Spain’s most important musicians of the first half of the 20th century.

This transcription is taken from the ballet “El amor brujo”, which was composed shortly after Falla’s return to Madrid, shortly after the start of World War I. “El Amor Brujo” sort of tranlates as “The Love Wizard”.

“Recit de Pécheur” (The Fisherman’s Song) is sad and sweet music; poignant and gentle, with humility and sincerity. The cello version is better suited to four individual players rather than a larger cello ensemble, though both options are possible. Technically this music should not cause problems for intermediate players (thumb position is not used); however, the interpretive demands are greater, being able to coax out fine colourings!
