FAURE – ‘Fileuse’ (The Spinner), for CELLO and PIANO, prepared for Cello and Piano by David Johnstone
PDF 1 – Cello Part
PDF 2 – Piano Part
..
If you are looking for a gentle virtuoso piece then this little arrangement of FAURE may well be to your liking. Well, I say ‘virtuoso’ but it’s not really harder than the same composer’s ‘Papillon’ (Butterfly)…
It is the second piece from the orchestral suite ‘Pelleas and Melisande’, Op.80.
…
Pelléas et Mélisande, Op. 80 is the incidental music that Gabriel Fauré composed and conducted in 1898 for the London production of Maeterlinck’s play of the same name. The play was premiered on 21st June, 1898 at the Prince of Wales Theatre, obtaining a resounding success.
…
In 1900 Fauré composed a suite of the work in five movements, revising the orchestration to bring it closer to the style of Maeterlink. The premiere of this suite was held on 3rd February, 1901 by the Orchester Lamoureux conducted by Camille Chevillard.
The second movement ‘Fileuse’ (The Spinner) was arranged in turn by the great violin virtuoso and pedagogue Lepold Auer, and by using this base and frequently changing the octave registers it isa well possible to play on cello, though difficult!
..
As anecdotes, and I am not sure why, but the third movement of five ‘Chanson de Mélisande’ is rarely performed today. However, the fourth movement, the Sicilienne, widely known today on flute, was actually transcribed by the composer for CELLO, as a dedication to W.H. (William Henry) Squire. Squire was an important orchestral principal cellist of his time in London, and it is said the Fauré was very impressed by his playing on the first stand!
As always, glory to good cellists !!!
