Franchomme is chiefly remembered for his collaborations with Chopin, but he was a fine composer for cello in his own right. Amongst his own works he is perhaps most remembered for his 12 Caprices Opus 7, which were written with the optional idea of a second cello part, which is rather more than mere accompaniment. These, along with his ‘Etudes’, were to some point undoubtedly inspired by Paganini’s famous 24 Caprices, Op. 1 for solo violin, composed circa 1804 and published in1820. Some of the feel is equally as much Italian as French!

The fine North American cellist Nicole Johnson has gone one step further – she has painstakingly reconverted this into a Cello Quartet, which should prove to be a great addition to cello quartet repertoire!
