Notes:
ALEXANDER GLAZUNOV
Born: 10th August, 1865 in St. Petersburg
Died: 21st March, 1936 in Paris
Glazunov showed a remarkable talent at a very early age. He started with piano lessons and began composition study with Rimsky-Korsakov at age 15. After but a year and a half of instruction from Rimsky-Korsakov, Glazunov composed his First Symphony, which received major premieres in St. Petersburg and Weimar, Germany, and practically overnight, Glazunov’s reputation as a great Russian composer was laid. When he was 19, the Russian Symphony gave an all-Glazunov concert! Glazunov’s progress was indeed astonishing. In 1884, the rich merchant and publisher Belyayev took Glazunov to Weimar, where the young composer met Liszt. Although absorbing many musical influences, particularly those of Liszt and Wagner, Glazunov eventually crafted an individual style, composing symphonies, ballets, and concertos for various instruments.
Alexander Glazunov is now valued as the great bridge figure of Russian music. During his early years, Tchaikovsky and the composers of the nationalistic school set the musical tone of the time and dominated current concert programs. In his later years, the music of Prokofiev, Shostakovich, and Stravinsky was startling audiences as they set exciting new directions for 20th century music. Glazunov never allied himself with either group; his was a more conservative approach, largely under the influence, in different aspects of his music, of Brahms and Liszt. In 1899, Glazunov was appointed to the faculty of the St. Petersburg Conservatory and in 1905 Glazunov was named head of the Conservatory. While his output may have diminished in terms of sheer quantity after 1905 (he complained “that his stock of music paper was almost exhausted”), he continued composing until the end of his life, mostly writing for special occasions. One should also bear in mind the distress for composers and artists at the political turmoil of those years.
Vocal music was not a favourite genre of Alexander Glazunov. He wrote just over thirty songs, most written in his youth, and passionately disliked opera as a genre. That said, the vocal heritage of Glazunov is still an under-explored stratum of Russian music. This present song melody, prepared by Johnstone is not difficult for the cellist technically – the writing does not venture farther than the first-string octave A from the open string and is noted ‘Andante’. However, it requires a good singing tone and variety of vibrato to perform successfully. An interesting addition for cellists of any level!
