General difficulty of the music – other brief Information:
EASY
The seven Children’s Songs were written in 1898 (voice and piano), with their arrangement for high voices coming in 1901. All but one of their texts are by well-known Norwegian poets. Grieg did not consider that this set formed a formal cycle and so the songs are interspersed, which makes this a capella program easier to listen to straight through. Also you can choose just a few of these pieces, or one only, they are considered individual concert pieces.
The cello trio version is comfortable to play for elementary cellists; the writing is close in register and rhythmically straight-forward with no imitation or counterpoints present. The individual parts have not been produced, it should be easy enough playing from the general ‘Playing Sore’. Over 90% of the writing is in first position, with just occasional excursions into 2nd or 3rd position by the first cello part. Even so, it is felt that for larger forces a conductor will be useful.
