Brief Information:

Ernesto Halffter, Spanish composer, lived from 1905 to 1989. Halffter was a prominent member of the Generation of 27 and the Grupo de Madrid. Halffter wrote “Ai que linda moça” in 1940, during the period of his Portuguese exile.  He was married to the Portuguese pianist Alice Câmara Santos; they chose to live in Lisbon in this period up to 1954. The Song is one of 6 Portuguese Songs based on popular texts (the whole cycle was completed in 1940-1941). This particular song borders on the Portuese ‘Fado’ for its sadness and expressiveness. The cello part is a total creation of David Johnstone, giving richness to the original voice and piano parts, which hardly change as noted down by Halffter. It is best suited for experienced chamber music artists.
