Notes:
Joseph Hollmann (1852 – 1926/7) was born in Holland and later lived in France. He was a pupil of Keller, Servais (Brussels Conservatoire), and also privately studied with Jacquard and Davidov. According to a few contemporary reports (including that of none less than Pierre Fournier!) his playing in his old age tapered off substantially, but it cannot be denied that he had a glorious career. He was the first cellist to play ‘Kol Nidrei’ with orchestra in Britain. He was the dedicatee of the Saint-Saens Second Cello Concerto written in 1902 – and he gave the premiere in 1905. He also performed the premiere of Saint-Saen’s Double Concerto ‘La muse et son poète’ for the composer’s ‘silver jubilee’ in London in 1910 along with the great Ysaÿe on violin. Other dedications and premieres included Delius – Romance, for cello and piano (1896), and the Massenet – Fantasy (Concerto), for cello and orchestra (1897). Apart from a career as soloist he played in a trio with Ulman and Strakosch.
His close friendships included Wagner, Liszt, A. Rubinstein, Delibes, and J. Wolff. This probably inspired in some part his own desires in composition. His original creations include at least two cello concertos a Carmen Fantasy, and many smaller pieces. The present featured song ‘Chanson d’Amour’ (Love Song – Liebeslied) was first published in 1886 and likely to be have written shortly before that date. It was scored for soprano, cello and piano and was sub-titled “Hommage à Madame Christine Nilsson”. It was first recorded in 1906, in New York, by the soprano Emma Eames, with the composer himself on cello (this recording is still available, though seems to sound one tone higher than the printed edition!).
Unfortunately, it has largely fallen into oblivion since World War II, but it’s rediscovery is certainly to be welcomed. The voice part has been marked for cello soloist (as Cello 1) by David Johnstone, though any soprano can read from the piano part along with ‘cello 2’.
