“In the Mood” is a popular big band-era jazz standard recorded by American bandleader Glenn Miller. It was initially released just before the outbreal of World War II. A No. 1 hit, it topped the charts for 13 straight weeks in 1940 in the U.S. and one year later was featured in the movie Sun Valley Serenade. “In the Mood” was an arrangement by Joe Garland based on an existing melody.
In the version for two cellos by David Johnstone both parts are fairly virtuosic; to be honest is best attempted by Music College/Conservatoire students and professional players. An advanced bow control is essential, as is the ability of quick left-hand position changes – but it is all well playable! The two parts share the melodic importance as a kind of ‘jazz chamber work’ in Johnstone’s conception. However Cello 1 always plays the initial arpeggio theme which acts as a sort of ‘Rondo’ theme.
