Brief Information:
The principal thematic material to David Johnstone’s ‘Cello Power’ March is shared between the first four cellos, but all parts help contribute this enjoyable concert item, and none should be omitted. Although of brief duration (some two minutes) this is a really rousing cello work, which might bring to the listener memories of the famous ‘Pomp and Circumstance’ March (Elgar), and makes a wonderful beginning (or grand finale ending!) to a cello ensemble concert.
General difficulty of the music:
EASY to MEDIUM. The top four parts reach to 5th-7th position (just once does Cello 1 make a move into ‘basic’ thumb position. The writing of the parts of Cellos 5 to 8 are always in the first position, though an occasional finger extension may be found (and some double-stoppings if with 8 cello soloists; for cello orchestra simply play divisi). For advanced players everything should be perfectly readable on sight. It is set in the glorious cello key of C Major, to which Johnstone makes fine use of with the vibrant open strings.
This musical creation was written for: Ivan Casado, Spanish Basque cellist and professor
