Notes:
The original Colonel Bogey march is a popular march that was written, and published, in 1914 by Lieutenant F. J. Ricketts (1881–1945), a British army bandmaster who later became director of music for the Royal Marines at Plymouth. Since service personnel were, at that time, not encouraged to have professional lives outside the armed forces, F. J. Ricketts published his now famous “Colonel Bogey” and other compositions under the pseudonym Kenneth J. Alford.
The march is often whistled, as it seems ideal for a whistling voice! Above in, all more modern times, the fame rapidly grew when it was featured in the film “The Bridge on the River Kwai” in 1957. For this production, the English composer Malcolm Arnold added a counter-march, which he titled “The River Kwai March”, for the dramatic film set during World War II. The two marches were then recorded together by Mitch Miller as “March from the River Kwai – Colonel Bogey” and this reached top 20 in the US in 1958.
The version for two cellos gives the higher melodic lines to the first part, yet the second voice is very energetic and it absolutely vital to the phrase construction. The playing registers are fairly straight-forward for the medium-to-advanced cellist. Little thumb position is required in Cello1, and not at all in Cello 2. However, in both parts there is an abundance of double-stopping which, whilst fairly comfortable, does require a certain level of stamina!
Dedication: to Paul Lawrence Finkelstein and Suzanne Mueller, the cellists of “Cambiata Cello Duo”
