MONIUSZKO – The Cossack (song) – 4 Cellos (easy) or larger cello ensemble
PDF 1 – General Score
PDF 2 – All individual parts
Notes:
Stanisław Moniuszko (5th May, 1819, Warsaw – 4th June, 1872) was a Polish composer. Stanislaw Moniuszko was slightly younger than his compatriot Chopin, but while the latter left Poland when he was 20 and never returned, Moniuszko remained there all his life – apart from studies in Berlin 1837-1840
He studied in Berlin, and influenced by the theories of musical nationalism, he was the creator of the Polish opera, with Halka (1848), which premiered in Warsaw in 1858 after a revision – this is considered his most important work, and even today it is regarded as the national opera of Poland.
He also wrote the Operas Flis (The Boatman, 1858), Hrabina (The Countess, 1862), and Straszny Dwór (The Haunted House, 1865). Other compositions are perhaps less well known, but include religious music and chamber music.
‘The Cossack’ is an early song of his, but there also exists an extended solo piano versión. Johnstone’s setting for four cellos – or larger cello ensemble – is comfortable for all who are comfortable with the first four positions. A few bowings and fingerings are suggested.
