AVE MARÍA GUARANÍ

Among all the pieces composed for the film ‘The Mission’ – directed by Roland Joffé in 1986 – “Ave María Guaraní” is a special spiritual piece for a cappella choir, in which Morricone displays his talent and ability to intertwine the liturgical heritage of traditional Catholic polyphony (the maestro acknowledged that he sought inspiration from Monteverdi and Palestrina) with touches typical from contemporary composition. As such it makes for a wonderful piece for a cello choir (or 4 soloists); David Johnstone has merely transposed it down a perfect 5th and given cello indications and markings, bowings etc. As a ‘cello’ work it may be classed as medium technical level, although truthfully it is the ambience and the delicacy of the bow strokes that are the hardest things to bring off successfully.
