Modest MOUSSORGSKY – Oriental Chant (Lamentation from the cantata ‘Josua Navîne)
prepared for SOLO CELLO and PIANO by David Johnstone
PDF 1 – Both Cello and Piano parts
Notes:
Roughed out in 1874 and 1875 and then completed in 1877, ‘Joshua’ is a cantata for solo voice (which can be either mezzo-soprano, alto, or baritone), chorus, and orchestra. Mussorgsky himself wrote the text based on the Book of Joshua, 10:10-13.
Typically for Mussorgsky, the cantata Joshua, also known as Jesus Navinus, has a somewhat confusing compositional history as it does the name (Joshua and Jesus are variants of the same name in Russian and in Greek; it is only an accident of translation that the Messiah’s name isn’t Joshua Christ). Joshua is in fact a reworking of parts of a much earlier piece by Mussorgsky, a projected opera on Flaubert’s Salammbo that occupied him during 1863 and 1864.
The work sounds vaguely oriental and vaguely Jewish! Like so many of Mussorgsky’s works, ‘Joshua’ suffers from an uncertain compositional and ‘inspirational’ history. He claimed that the themes came from melodies he heard his Jewish neighbours singing at a synagogue. That having been said, and whatever the source, this melody works gorgeously well on the cello!
