General difficulty of the music – other brief Information:
MEDIUM – Cello I moves in the higher registers but the slowish tempo should not present many difficulties. The other parts do not move beyond fourth position. The key of C Major treats the cello quite kindly in this piece. This is set as a chamber music piece; much better for five individual soloists rather than cello orchestra.
The Adagio in C major, K. 356 / 617a, is a short piece composed for the glass harmonica by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, being the last of a series of works for instruments out of the ordinary, commissioned by different lords. However it has enjoyed a somewhat better history as a piece for organ.
The date of its composition is not known exactly, since Mozart did not include it in his personal thematic catalog. Ludwig von Köchel considered that the work dated from 1781 or 1782 at the latest, so when making his catalog of Mozart’s work he identified it as KV 356. However, recent studies have revealed that the piece was probably written in 1791.
