Notes
The Magic Flute (German: Die Zauberflöte), K. 620, is an opera in two acts by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart to a German libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder. The work is in the form of a Singspiel, a popular form during the time it was written that included both singing and spoken dialogue. The work was premiered on 30th September 1791 at Schikaneder’s theatre, the Freihaus-Theater auf der Wieden in Vienna, just two months before the composer’s premature death.
The Magic Flute is noted for its prominent Masonic elements, although some scholars hold that the Masonic influence is exaggerated. It is sung in German and, above all, the texts represents the struggle between the powers of light and darkness.
Papageno is one of the main characters. His counterpart is “Papagena”. This Mozart opera shows a whole series of values such as friendship, courage or union in the face of danger or difficulties. Eventually, everything will end in the happiest possible way. Even for Papageno…. who will find his Papagena.
