EXAMPLE:
Brief Notes:
The sonata in Bb Major, K.292, for bassoon and cello was written in 1775 by an already mature Mozart, but was probably not published until about 1805. In the intermediate time it does not appear to be totally clear as to whether it may have been a bassoon sonata with only the left-hand bass (continuo) part of the keyboard, or whether it was a ‘proper’ duo. Grove Music lists the title as a “Duo”, but when it is compared with the duos for Violin and Viola, one can see that these other duos appear in single parts and not as score. In any event, this pleasant sonata can also be played on two bassoons, bassoon and cello, two cellos or with cello and double bass. However, the problem in ‘duo’ is that all the melodic interest is on the first part whilst the second voice always accompanies; therefore, this edition was arranged by Paul Bazelaire, cello professor at the Paris Conservatoire, and presumably it was arranged for his students there (?). For many cellists who know this version, this presentation is simply more ‘fun’ to play!
There are three movements:
The difficulty is moderate, suitable for the intermediate cellist. There is no thumb position involved, but a multitude of extensions are used (generally backward extensions) and there is plenty of rhythmic interest to test the bowing arm. The Sonata is suggested as a substantial piece in cello duo concerts, alongside other shorter pieces.
