Notes:
Allelujah, K. 553, is a distinguished canon for four a cappella voices by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; Mozart included this work in his thematic catalogue on 2nd September, 1788, being the first of a series of ten canons. The existing autograph is a manuscript copied by Franz Schubert, dating from ca.1810.
The canon is written in the key of C major. The theme is modelled after the intonation of the Alleluia that follows the Epistle on Holy Saturday. In the canon, each of the voices make their entrance after six and a half bars. The canon presents an indication of Allegro, and the musical writing is characterized by the presence of long duration figures. David Johnstone shows each new entry of the motive by the inclusion of a couple of accents. The small piece is very comfortable by elementary cellists; it is all possible using only first and fourth positions, without any finger extensions being employed.
