August Nölck (1862 – 1928) was a prolific composer, virtuoso cellist, pianist, and music educator of the German School of Romanticism. He produced over 250 sheet music works, some of which have endured and are performed today. Nölck is well known for his cello repertoire.
Nölck was part of the Dresden School of cello playing, which included Friedrich Wilhelm Grützmacher, who formed a foundation for the modern school of technique represented by Pablo Casals, Emanuel Feuermann, and others. Nölck’s music as a composer reflects the Romantic styles of Brahms, Schumann, and Mendelssohn. As professor of cello and piano, Nölck composed over three hundred works that included concertos, whims, waltzes, concertina, gavottes, minuets, mazurkas, funeral marches, and the like. Some are very difficult even for professional performers, whilst others are quite easy for young cellists. However, due to the two World Wars in Germany and political divisions of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, only his works produced in Venezuela have been recovered.
The Capriccietto comes from the collection “10 Original Pieces in the First 4 Positions”. These were written in about 1904, and given Op.116. The piece is in an arched ternary form, and Johnstone’s arrangement for four cellos or soloist and cello orchestra is very comfortable in ALL parts, both for the left hand and in a rhythmic sense for the arco too. However, the allegro tempo gives this piece a ‘Scherzo’ feel which immediately connects with the audience, probably seeming far more difficult to non-cellists than it really is – a perfect piece to learn!
This cello ensemble version piece is dedicated to: Rodolfo Zanni
