A barcarolle (from French, also barcarole; originally, Italian barcarola or barcaruola, from barca ‘boat’) is a traditional folk song sung by Venetian gondoliers, or a piece of music composed in that style. In classical music, two of the most famous barcarolles are Jacques Offenbach’s “Belle nuit, ô nuit d’amour”, from his opera The Tales of Hoffmann; and Frédéric Chopin’s Barcarolle in F-sharp major for solo piano.
The Tales of Hoffmann (French: Les contes d’Hoffmann) is an opéra fantastique by Jacques Offenbach. The French libretto was written by Jules Barbier, based on three short stories by E. T. A. Hoffmann, who is the protagonist of the story. It was Offenbach’s final work, as he died a year before the premiere.
The barcarolle, “Belle nuit, ô nuit d’amour” in the Venetian act, is the opera’s most famous number, but was in fact borrowed and adapted by Offenbach from his earlier opera Rheinnixen (French: Les fées du Rhin). This piece opens the opera’s third act, set in Venice. It is sung by the characters Giulietta – the protagonist Hoffmann’s love, a Venetian courtesan – and Nicklausse – Hoffmann’s poetic muse, in disguise as his faithful male companion.
The idea of this TWO CELLO creation is to give to intermediate cellists and even cellists with only a few years experience a chamber music piece which does not go beyond fourth or fifth position in the first cello part, which is the famous melody line. The second cello has an accompanying arpeggio role, but one which is vital to the harmonic implications of the phrases. Rather than just a song, this becomes a concert piece for two cellos. Despite the Eb Major setting – meaning many backward extensions – it should not present too many difficulties to modest but keen musicians.
