EASY to MEDIUM.First cello plays up to 7th position and is written in the treble clef, but all other parts are fairly easy.
“The Hymn in Honor of Saints Cyril and Methodius” is a short work by Tchaikovsky written in 1885 for the Moscow Conservatoire Student choir. He adapted a Czech hymn to his needs, producing a richly harmonic setting in ‘moderato’ tempo – which despite being a hymn is still unmistakably Tchaikovsky; the dynamic range alone is enormous! The first performance was in April of that year, and it was sung in Russian, in a SATB chorus. As such, and although transposed by Johnstone, it makes for a most convincing rendition when played on cellos, whether as a solo quartet or by a larger ensemble (in which case a conductor is optional). The signs are that the premiere was a great success, and the work was published a few months later.
