Notes:
Music in Mexico is amazingly rich in a variety of genres, rhythms, and themes. It is the result of the miscegenation between European and American traditions, but it has deep pre-Hispanic and African roots that, although perhaps being little recognized in other cultural spheres, it is in music where it acquires its greatest relevance.
The popular song “Antonino” (‘Little Anthony’) is, as far as the present arranger knows, anonymous but has existed going many generations back.
David Johnstone has made a cello quartet version in G Major, so as to be suitable for ensembles without too much experience (yet!). The first cello part does not go beyond the left-hand 4th position, and the other voices are in first position, although some finger extensions are required.
The ‘Allegro burlesco’ indication refers more to the energy than the speed; for young cellists it is sufficient to be played in a fast four 8th-notes rather than in 2. It can be equally convincing played by cello groups or orchestras of any size!
