What A Moonlit Night (Ukrainian: Ніч яка місячна) is an Ukrainian song with lyrics from a poem by Mykhailo Starytsky.
One of Ukraine’s most popular folk songs, it has been performed by an enormous number of artists, including Oleksandr Ponomariov, Konstantin Ognevoy, Anatoliy Solovianenko, Dmytro Hnatyuk, Mykola Kondratiuk, Cara Schlecker, Mykola Platonov, Evgeny Belyaev, Boris Gmyrya, Kvitka Cisyk, Yaroslav Alexandrovich Evdokimov, Christian Ketter, and Alexander Malinin.
The song ‘What A Moonlit Night’, as a flexible duet (but always including the cello), is David Johnstone’s adaptation of this classic Ukrainian song that has an uplifting, pastoral quality to it. The song is not political as such but it references the beautiful nature of the country as a setting for the comfort and support of a friend or lover and also displays a feeling of bravery; not being afraid of the night gives it such relevant meaning. The reference to the night being so bright that you can collect needles is typically Ukrainian in the original song. Indeed, it is a song that the Ukrainian people know from childhood.
Dedicated to Cintia and Sasha with love
