EXAMPLE from the Cello 2 part:
Notes:
“Can’t Help Falling in Love” is a song that first sprang to fame when it was recorded by American singer Elvis Presley for the album and film ‘Blue Hawaii’ (1961). It was credited as being written by Hugo Peretti, Luigi Creatore, and George David Weiss and published by Gladys Music, Inc., but in truth it was above all written by the songwriter George Weiss. New York-born George Weiss was a military bandleader in World War II, but went on to achieve great fame as a prolific songwriter in the ’40s, ’50s ’60s and ’70s. Among the great ‘hits’ he penned were “What a Wonderful World” recorded by Louis Armstrong in 1967, The Stylistics 1975 UK chart-topper “Can’t Give You Anything (But My Love),” and “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” a reworking of a South African Zulu song. He died in 2010 at age of 89.
The first part of this song melody is itself based on “Plaisir d’amour”, a popular French love song composed in 1784 by Martini. Elvis Presley’s version of the song topped the British charts in 1962, spending four weeks at No.1. This was to become Elvis’ most popular and famous love song, and Elvis ended most of his concerts with this music.
In 1979 Engelbert Humperdinck recorded the song on his ‘This Moment in Time’ LP. The single reached No.44 in the US and No.11 in Canada.
In 1993, British reggae band UB40 covered the original music in the first single in their album, ‘Promises and Lies’. The song was released on 10th May, 1993, and climbed to No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100, staying there for seven weeks. It also topped the charts of 11 other countries, including Australia, Austria, the Netherlands, New Zealand (where it was the most successful single of 1993), and the United Kingdom where it topped the chart for 2 months. The song and band also appear in the 1997 film ‘Speed 2: Cruise Control’. A music video was produced to promote the single, directed by American filmmaker Neil Abramson, and was published on YouTube in June 2009. The video has amassed a massive 60+ million views as of September 2021.
“Can’t Help Falling in Love” was also the Swedish pop group A-Teens’ first single from their third studio album, ‘Pop ’til You Drop!’, and is also included in the Lilo & Stitch movie soundtrack. The song has two music videos, one to promote the Disney movie, the other for the album.
And so, to 2023, and to a ‘new’ cello ensemble version by David Johnstone, in F Major. It is rather ‘choral’ in nature, generally the four parts moving together. For this reason, no conductor score is produced, though the rehearsal letters should make it comfortable to put together! Left-hand thumb position is not required, though the first cello does play occasionally in 7th position. The technical level can be classed only as ‘moderate’, and can make for a convincing piece for FOUR cellos or LARGER cello ensemble, and for school or youth orchestra ensembles, as well as being something ‘nice’ to play on cello courses!
