The idea of this series of pieces is to present a cello soloist being accompanied by orchestra who does not have to think the word ‘virtuoso’; instead it is a chance to make nice music and enjoy oneself rather than have a priority of ‘showing off’. These pieces will only very rarely – or often not at all – arrive at thumb position, the first four positions are the most employed. They might be play by full professionals (as a relax or an encore) or by modest students (perhaps as a nice prize for worthy music school students as they make their first venture with an orchestra backing them).
