Brief Notes:

The music of Heitor Villa-Lobos is often reflected in his two loves: Brazilian culture and the music of J. S. Bach. He was a proud Brazilian, fascinated by his country’s history and culture; indeed, when he arrived in Paris it was not to study but “to show the world what I can do”!

Ever since receiving the gift of some preludes and fugues from the Well-Tempered Clavier from his aunt as a child, Villa-Lobos had been captivated by Bach’s style and technique. His best-known compositions, a set of nine suites for various combinations of instruments and (sometimes) voices called Bachianas Brasileiras reflect both of these influences. But he also made other experiments like arranging Bach Preludes and Fugues for cello orchestra (some he conducted recordings in 1958), and also for mixed choir. David Johnstone has in turn re-set three of these choral numbers for cello ensembles. Curiously, the third ‘choral’ fugue (Fugue No. 21 in B flat major, BWV 890) Villa-Lobos also arranged for cellos, but I have lowered this down a fourth to make it more playable by ‘normal’ cellists (the high voices of dear Heitor’s version is out of bounds except for soloists!).

Enjoy the music !
