Notes:
David Johnstone has lived for many years in the north of Spain, and with Scottish and Irish blood (apart from English) he feels connected to the Basque musical heritage. This is an attempt to merge these two great cultures.
The work is constructed of three sections – slow, medium and fast – and contains numerous fragments of Celtic material including: ‘The Flower of the Quern’, ‘The Bob of Dowally’, ‘Timour the Tartar’, ‘The Countess of Sutherland’ and original motives of David Johnstone.
In the individual parts, the number or numbers appearing under the music are to guide players as to which other part has the melodic importance, these numbers refer to:
1 – txistu 1 / 2 – txistu 2 / 3 – txistu 3 / 4 – txistu 4 / 5 – silbote 1 / 6 – silbote 2
The work as a sextet should be envisaged of as a piece of ‘chamber music’, and ALL parts share the limelight! Having said that, this music will work equally well played by a large txistu orchestra with no upper limit to the number of players.
Percussion has not been specifically written for the music, although performing groups are most welcome to incorporate their own percussion/drums etc. in a basically Celtic or Basque style.
Enjoy the music!
